Built just after the turn of the
century, this 1800 square foot home looks across the street to a park complete with
original log buildings and views of the beautiful foothills and high Golden bluffs.
The home is listed in the Golden 12th
Street Historical District where design restrictions have to be met before a building
permit can be issued.
The first phase of work required
replacement of the old porch windows with new insulated glass windows. Top Quality
Remodeling carpenters worked closely with the window supplier to ensure the new windows
would match the existing in size and design.
The next phase was considerably more
difficult. Plywood walkways and plastic fencing barriers were constructed to
preserve the extensive landscaping.
Because of the condition of the brick
mortar, the new foundation area (approximately 10 tons of dirt) had to be dug by hand.
During excavation, additional work was done to improve the structural integrity of
that area of the house so that the new bay window could be installed.
The living room ceiling now had to
extend uninterrupted into the new bay area. The inside walls gently curved into the
ceiling in the original design and the drywall subcontractor duplicated both the design
and texture of the original walls.
Recessed light accents the new area as
well as an existing fireplace wall.
The existing window trim throughout the
house was a mixture of old styles, none of which are now available.
The contractor
modified available trim shapes to meet the general house design and added window sills at
the new windows.
